Arriving at School

Thank you for sending the children to school in masks and with their purple Home Health Screening sheets in hand.  It helps us to expedite the arrival process, and students come ready to get the school day started!

Yearbook Update

Our 2019-20 yearbooks are en route!  It’s been a long wait, but these books are sure to bring back some great memories.  We will get these sorted and distributed as soon as possible.  Thank you for your patience!

School Pictures
Our school picture day is on Wednesday, October 7.  Students will wear their masks walking to and from the photographer, who will be set up in the gym, and take their masks off to smile for the camera!  Picture make-up day, for those absent on Wednesday or needing a re-take, will be held on November 17.  This November date is also the time that all of our remote learners are invited to have their school picture taken.  Remote students will receive a picture order form in the mail along with specific safety directions about that picture day as the date gets closer.

Update From Our Nurses

If you haven’t yet, please take a minute to read this note from the WG nurses which outlines the protocol that the school must follow when students show signs and symptoms of illness. We will continue to inform you of changes or revisions.  Again, we thank you for your continued support from home as we make every effort to keep one another safe and healthy.

 

#PositivityInAction!

Next week we will take a look at what it means to be open-minded.  Open-mindedness means you like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.

 

Mark Your Calendar for Half-Day Dismissal

October 16 is a half-day for students and a professional development afternoon for staff. Students will be dismissed at 11:00-11:15 for buses, and 11:15-11:30 for students being picked up by parents. Don’t forget to make your child care arrangements if needed!

Greetings from Onondaga Road!

I cannot thank you enough for your assistance and support throughout the first two full weeks of school!  Our opening weeks have proven to be productive and positive, both in school and remote.  The children seem quite happy to reunite with their friends and teachers, and they are getting accustomed to the new environment and routines.

#PositivityInAction
We continue to explore our character strengths and the strengths of others through the Positivity Project. I have witnessed “positivity in action” (the new hashtag!) in more ways than you can imagine upon return to school!  Children and adults alike have positively welcomed, supported, and encouraged one another as we came back together!  This week we explored “curiosity” as a character trait.  Curiosity describes those who seek exploration and discovery, and those who ask lots of questions in order to learn more.  Next week we will learn about teamwork and citizenship, and how these are traits of people who are willing to commit time and resources to reach group goals and help move toward the greater good.

Last year’s yearbooks are finally here!  We are in the process of sorting them and will distribute them as soon as possible!

 

School Pictures

School Picture Day is October 7 for in-school students and November 17 for remote students.  Be on the lookout for details being sent home with your child (and mailed to remote families). 

 

OR PTA Membership
Your child will be bringing home a PTA Membership “application.”  Please know that becoming an official member does not commit you to meetings or to volunteer at activities.  Becoming a member gives you a voice to vote on PTA offered events and elections.  Although our extracurricular offerings throughout this particular year remain to be seen, our PTA does provide assistance to classroom teachers for various supplies and donations.  Your membership dues contribute to such requests and to our local PTA’s national affiliation.  Please consider returning the membership form in support of our PTA and your school community! Two years ago Onondaga Road School received national recognition for having an outstanding number of PTA members; maybe we can do that again!

Safety Notes and Reminders

• Never, ever pass a parked school bus in the bus loop, for any reason, even if the flashing lights are off!  If you are parked behind a bus, you must wait for the bus to leave!

• Please send your child’s Health Screening Sheet to school each day. 

• You may not drop your child off earlier than 8:40 a.m. If you pull into the parking lot earlier than that, you must keep your child in the car with you until our staff members come outside at 8:40.  Children should never be left unattended on the sidewalk.

• If you pull into the bus loop for drop-off and pick-up (even tag numbers), please stay to the righthand curb when dropping off your children, closest to the sidewalk.  Do not park to the left, by the grass, forcing children to walk between cars to get to and from the sidewalk, as this creates obvious danger for children.  Remember, patience is a virtue!

• If you need to pick up your child early, please make sure you send in a note.  All early dismissals must occur before 2:00 p.m., and you must come to the main door to sign them out. If your child is arriving to school late, after the buses have unloaded, they must enter the main door accompanied by an adult to sign them in.

Greetings from Onondaga Road!

Thank you to our amazing teachers and all of you for participating in our Curriculum/Title 1 information night!  If you have any questions about curriculum or the structure of our school day, feel free to contact me or your child’s teacher any time. 

Curriculum Night for our remote learners will be distributed electronically on Thursday, and you can access it at your convenience.

Welcome Back Onondaga Road!

Our children were so very happy to be back to school!  It was a great week!

Thank you all for your patience and help as we work through our dismissal process together.  Just remember, drop off in the morning between 8:40-8:55, and pick up in the afternoon after all buses are gone from the bus loop, 2:30.  Thank you again for your amazing and continued support!

Curriculum/Title 1 Night

What:  Zoom Presentations - Curriculum Night

Time: (Grades 3, 4) 6:00-6:30    (Grades K, 1, 2) 6:30-7:00

Objective: A time where you will be able to meet your child's classroom teacher/team and be informed about classroom procedures, expectations, means of communication, and grade-level curriculum. 

When: Tuesday, September 15, 2020

Remote classes have a separate Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 17, 2020.

Yearbook Update (from 2019-20)

I realize the yearbook situation has been a bit frustrating. We have been in frequent contact with Lifetouch, the elementary school yearbook vendor, and as I’ve mentioned, their facility has been hit with multiple COVID-related  disruptions resulting in frequent shutdowns.  Once we have confirmation about receiving the yearbooks, we will figure out a distribution plan, including our fifth graders at WGMS!
